BURNOUT PARADISE (PS3)

Hey guys,

So this week's game, and for that matter, the first game reviewed on this website, is Burnout Paradise

Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360, PC

Publisher: EA

Developer: Criterion

Year: 2008

Genre: Racing (open world)

Played On: PS3

Burnout Paradise is a fun game, I mean, who wouldn't want to drive crazy around a whole city, destroying cars, signs, and crashing into everything? Best of all, there are no cops to come and arrest you!

Burnout Paradise is different from its predecessors in the Burnout series in that there is a lot more freedom. Set in fictional Paradise City, you have a massive map to explore. There is even another whole island, Big Surf Island, but you have to buy that. You don't even have to do any events if you prefer just driving around and having massive crashes with everything in sight.

But in order to progress in the game, you have to complete events.
The events include:

Races,
Stunt Runs,
Road Rages,
Burning Routes,
and Marked Mans.

My personal favourite is the Road Rage, where you drive around the city and you have several opponents whom you have to 'Take down' which basically involves destroying your opponents' cars.

There are 75 fictional cars that you can win in the game, by completing a certain number of events, or by having your license upgraded. It is quite fun and sometimes a bit of a challenge to get these cars. As you're driving around town, there are four types of drive throughs to look out for. The paint shop, the auto repair, the junkyard and the boost refill station. Driving through a paint shop will change the colour of your car and driving through an auto repair will repair your car. If you drive through a junkyard, you can change the car you are in, and if you drive through a boost refill station, it tops up your boost, which is a special fuel you can use to make your car go faster as you are driving. Much faster.

Above: Notice the green flames shooting out the back of the car? That is boost.

The game has good graphics and a fantastic soundtrack as well with music for everyone, making it enjoyable to play. There is also 'Crash FM' a radio station in paradise city that comes on every now and then and gives you random tips and reminders.

While Burnout paradise is only a one player game, There is also an online mode where you can play with other people from around the world. You can complete events with them and chat with them, as you'd expect. But it would be good to have a two player mode so you could maybe play a 2p split screen race or road rage.

Another issue with the game, and although a minor one, can sometimes be a bit annoying. Since it is such a large map, you have to learn your way around the city in order to play events, specifically races easily. However, once you have learnt your way around, it is quite fun, and plus, there is a map in the corner but that can be hard to follow sometimes.

Also, you will notice that in Burnout Paradise, there are no people, unless you have a motor bike. You could view this as either a good thing or a bad thing, but it is a bit weird to see cars driving themselves around.

Weekly Gamer Score:

8.5/10

See you next week,
